FOX's 'Boy' Is Dempsey

Patrick Dempsey, who received an Emmy nomination for his work on ABC's "Once and Again" is coming to FOX as the star of the sitcom pilot "About a Boy."

Based on the novel by Nick Hornby and the 2002 film directed by Chris and Paul Weitz, "About a Boy" will focus on self-absorbed thirtysomething (Dempsey) whose inherent faith in his own coolness is put to the test when he befriends a troubled 12-year-old boy and his equally troubled mother. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "About a Boy" pilot was written by Matthew Carlson ("The Wonder Years"), who will also executive produce.

In addition to his work on "Once and Again," Dempsey has done guest spots on "Will & Grace." On the big screen, Dempsey has starred in "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Meatballs III." He was most recently seen opposite Reese Witherspoon in "Sweet Home Alabama."

In other casting news, at ABC, Bill Duke has joined the drama pilot "Karen Sisco." Based on the Jennifer Lopez character in Elmore Leonard and Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight," the show will focus on a female US marshal played by Carla Gugino. Duke has most recently been seen in "Red Dragon," "Never Again" and "Exit Wounds." He is also the director of "Deep Cover" and "Hoodlum."

/>Also at ABC, Missi Pyle ("The Wayne Brady Show"), Robin Bartlett ("Mad About You"), Geoff Shults ("7th Heaven") and Dan Lauria ("The Wonder Years") will appear in Jenny McCarthy's untitled sitcom pilot. The McCarthy project, a riches-to-rags tale of a socialite stripped of her money, is produced by Touchstone TV.

On NBC, Tamala Jones ("For Your Love") will play Tracy Morgan's wife in an untitled sitcom pilot and JoBeth Williams ("Payne," "Frasier") will guest star as Alicia Silverstone's mother in the dramedy "Miss Match."

Over at UPN, Christine Vidal (Nickelodeon's "Taina" ) and Michael Jai-White ("Wonderland") will co-star in "Hotel," an update of the 1980s ABC series. Vidal will play a maid and White the head of security at the show's titular Miami boarding establishment.

Also at UPN, Matt Czuchry ("Eight Legged Freaks" ) and Marina Black ("Six Feet Under") in the network's still-untitled nanobot drama (working title "Weapon X" ) about an NSA technician made into a superhero after being injected with nanobots.
